ENCORE! — September Song Project II

That night her kiss told me it was over
I walked out late into the dark
The misty gloom seems to soak up my sorrow
The further I went on I felt a spreading calm

Then suddenly my eyes were bathed in a light
And the lovely lady in white was by my side
She said “Like me I see you’re walking alone
Won’t you please stay?” I couldn’t look away

Or is it escapist fantasy of the young male mind? Knowing that something has ended, and there is a lady in white waiting for you? And there’s boobs involved. Yippee!

She said I love the night
The day is OK and the sun can be fun
But I live to see those rays slip away
I love the night
There’s so much I can show and give to you
If you will welcome me tonight
If only you had been there my dear
We could have shared this together

From the Spectres album 1977, the same one that unleashed Godzilla and Nosferatu, and who could forget the Golden Age of Leather?

No mortal was meant to see such wonder
One look in the mirror told me so
Come darkness I’ll see her again
Yes I’m gonna go ’cause now I know

She said I love the night
The day is OK and the sun can be fun
But I live to see those rays slip away
I love the night
There’s so much that I can show and give to you
If you will welcome me tonight
If only you had been there my dear
We could have shared this together

What is this song about?

Vampires. Yep.

In a Songfacts interview with Buck Dharma of Blue Öyster Cult, he explained: “That’s one of the several songs about vampires that we’ve written over the years. The idea is, Let’s paint vampires in an attractive and romantic light, which I think is one of the aspects of the vampire legend that is attractive.”

and here are your clues:

  1. That night her kiss told me it was over (Her kiss was a bite, his life over)
  2. Won’t you please stay?” I couldn’t look away (Because he was mesmerized by a vampire, which we all know they do)
  3. She said I love the night. The day is OK and the sun can be fun. But I live to see those rays slip away (Because vampires don’t like sunlight, although this one had a pretty positive attitude about it)
  4. One look in the mirror told me so (Vampires don’t have reflections)

and finally the hidden lyrics. The final verse that was cut from the Spectres album, but is played live which makes it more clear about the meaning.

Now I never rise until sun falls.
And my vision knows no walls.
And i’m looking for ladies walking alone.
They forget the day.
When they hear me say.

This song resonates with me, because I too like the night. It’s probably true of every creative person. Things settle down, the work day is over, chores are done and the castle is quiet. The perfect time for being creative, or late night erotic creative fun 😉

  1. This is what I love about the music memes – not only do you get to wax lyrical about songs you like but you are introduced to tracks or artists you might not know.
I hadn’t heard this song but I liked it a lot – a new mellow one for my playlist – loved the steel sound of the guitar – was reminded of Chris Isaac & the Passions (wicked game & im in love with a German film star respectively)
    Thanks Joseph x
